WEAPONS REVIEW: IT'S 2:17AM, DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE? At first, the film seemed to be a metaphor about school shootings. Maybrook felt like a makeshift name for the tragedy years ago in Connecticut. With moments that pay homage to The Shining (1980,) The Children Under the Stairs (1993,) What Lies Beneath (2000,) and more, the allegory has levels. Given the current state of the country and the fact that so much of Horror is reliant on our anxieties, (for instance, fear of censorship in the Quiet Place films) I couldn’t help but view it through the lens of American politics. At least not in front of Terrifier creator and director Damien Leone. Despite themes of religion, female-centric heroism, body autonomy, and more being woven into the smash hit Terrifier franchise, Leone took a firm stance with a statement yesterday (2/3/25.) ALIEN STAR WINS BIG AT BAFTA FILM AWARDS Alien: Romulus breakout actor David Jonsson is no stranger to the stars, especially as the latest recipient of BAFTA’s Rising Star Award. Jonsson’s performance as an android combatting his own programming earned rave reviews as well as the coveted award - beating out huge names like Mikey Madison (2022’s Scream) and Jharell Jerome (2019’s When They See Us.) This particular category is the only one voted on by the general public, so it’s safe to say audiences were just as endeared as critics and industry peers. “...I’d like to dedicate this to the people, the dreamers, grafters, and the people just trying to do it a little bit different. Star - I don't know, but rising – I guess!” Jonsson quipped onstage. With the recently elected administration openly sharing plans to oppress marginalized people, there’s no wonder audiences have been seeking the catharsis of Horror. Below you’ll find a list of major Horror releases this year that accurately capture timely political anxieties. THE SUBSTANCE INJECTS FULL SCRIPT ONLINE Deadline is helping “respect the balance” between filmmakers and audiences by releasing the full script for The Substance on their website. As awards season ramps up, some campaigning productions share their scripts for further consideration of screenwriting awards. The result is a rich opportunity for aspiring writers and filmmakers. Horror in Color celebrated LGBTQIA+ Pride and Horror with a pop-up marketplace, health resources, live performances and more including an exclusive sneak peek of upcoming Horror film “Howdy, Neighbor!” "PRIDE OR DIE" 2023 RECAP HORROR CONNECTS LGBTQIA+ PRIDE AT LA’S “PRIDE OR DIE” LOS ANGELES, CA - On Saturday, June 24th, Horror in Color’s celebration of Horror and LGBTQIA+ identity returned bigger and better for 2023. Pride or Die brought together a mini-marketplace of Queer-owned Horror businesses including Caffeinated Coven Co, Black Magic Cakery, Kelton FX, and Small Town Weirdo. These happy hauntings accompanied a jam-packed lineup of live entertainment at Media Pollution’s experimental art studio in Los Angeles. Horror Queers kicked off the free festivities with an exclusive episode of Joe Lipsett and Trace Thurman’s popular Horror podcast. Lights Out turned things up a notch with an electrifying performance and announcement of their latest themed experience, Lights Out: Nite Owl . Fresh off a collaboration with Ru Paul’s Drag Race’s Laganja Estranja , LVCRFT set the spooky mood with a two hour DJ set following the gruesomely glamorous Tik Tok sensation Major . Filmmaker Allisyn Snyder screened her short “Don’t Turn Off The Ghostlight” starring Chris Renfro before premiering an in-depth first look at her highly anticipated feature-length directorial debut, “Howdy, Neighbor!” The project was written by (and stars) Matthew Scott Montgomery and co-stars fellow Disney Channel heavyweights Debby Ryan and Alyson Stoner. Afro Horror podcast host Sadé Sellers then interviewed Snyder and Montgomery in a live, intimate conversation spanning filmmaking and Queer Horror. Young filmmakers are lighting paths in horror. Director Allisyn Snyder (Room 566, Nasty Habits, A.P. Bio, Sonny with a Chance) and writer Matthew Scott Montgomery (Unidentified with Demi Lovato, So Random!) gathered friends, family, and collaborators at a themed LA venue to premiere their newest short, Don’t Turn Off The Ghost Light. The hauntingly sweet short stars Queer As Folk (2022) actor Chris Renfro alongside Montgomery himself.
